Overview

Communicating across political, social and cultural divides is often complicated, but it has become more difficult in our increasingly polarized society. Prioritizing interpersonal connection and focusing on areas of commonality can diminish tension and build healthier relationships over time. Stephen Carroll, Ph.D., LCPC, offers strategies for creating a safe, respectful environment for differing perspectives.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

  1. Learn active listening skills to help establish areas of common interest and reinforce connection;
  2. Identify ways to set healthy parameters for engaging others in dialogue; and
  3. Explore mindfulness strategies for managing personal boundaries when tensions arise.
