Overview

Anyone who has been hurt by another person knows healing is not as simple as getting an apology or trying to forget and move on. Many of us end up stuck in our pain, unable to move forward. Rev. Ken Schmidt, MA, LPC, NCC, presents a process for experiencing healing through forgiveness.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

  1. Uncover the reasons we use to avoid forgiveness;
  2. Learn what interpersonal forgiveness is and is not; and
  3. Identify the components of a specific process for experiencing healing through forgiveness.

Who Should Participate

Priests, deacons, men and women religious, lay ministers, and those involved in vocations, formation, or clergy and ministry personnel needs.

Reflection Questions

Questions for reflection and discussion prior to the learning session:

  1. What does forgiveness mean to you?
  2. Is there someone whom you have not forgiven? What makes it difficult for you to forgive that person
  3. What might change if you forgive that person?

Questions for reflection and discussion after the learning session:

  1. What are specific obstacles (emotions, thoughts, behaviors) that get in the way of you forgiving the person(s) who hurt you?
  2. How do you feel, think, and behave when you have not extended forgiveness? What “price” do you pay?
  3. Do you really want to forgive? Why or why not?
  4. What are some steps you can take to enter your own healing process?
