Building on the concept of sexual identity articulated in Sexual Identity: A Multi-Factored Model, Br. John Mark Falkenhain, OSB, Ph.D. addresses what sexual integrity and sexual integration look like in the context of a commitment to chaste celibacy. This discussion of sexual integration is informed by the realities of typical human development, with the aim of helping vocation directors and formation directors better understand a candidate’s relationship to his or her sexuality.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

  1. Explore the concept of integrity as it relates to sexual identity;
  2. Understand how personal and historical factors such as sexual orientation, history of abuse and family attitudes can influence sexual integration; and
  3. Learn to identify signs of sexual integrity and integration.

Who Should Participate

Priests, deacons, religious, diocesan lay ministers, parish staff, seminarians, and those involved in vocations, formation, and personnel needs.

Reflection Questions

Questions for reflection and discussion prior to the learning session are provided below.

  1. Given the developmental model of sexual integration discussed, at what stage should a candidate be:  (a) at the time of entering seminary or a religious formation program; (b) at the time of ordination or final vows?
  2. What are appropriate ways for formation staff to assist a candidate in developing an age-appropriate level of sexual integration?
  3. What are the systems in place in my diocese/community for ongoing assessment and growth in the areas of sexual integrity and integration?
